Individual Therapy

For helpers, healers & high-achieving professionals.

You've Been Holding It Together for a Long Time.

Maybe it's finally time for someone to hold space for you.

Individual therapy for adults at Foothold Counseling is not one-size-fits-all, and it is not a place to just vent. It is a working relationship - grounded in real honesty, built around your nervous system, and designed to actually get somewhere.

You Know Something Isn't Right. You Just Can't Quite Name It.

You function. You probably function really well. You handle things, show up for people, and keep moving - even when you feel like you're running on empty underneath it all.

But there's something that doesn't go away. It might look like anxiety that spikes for no clear reason. A low hum of exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix. A growing sense that you're going through the motions, even in your own life. Emotions that feel too big, or maybe no emotions at all.

If you're a helper, healer, therapist, nurse, veterinarian, or just someone who has spent years being the strong one for everyone around you - this feeling is probably very familiar. You know how to take care of others. Turning that care toward yourself feels harder than it should.

The Part Nobody Talks About

You've probably already tried to figure this out. Maybe you've read the books, listened to the podcasts, tried therapy before. And it helped - for a while. But you're still in some version of the same loop, and you're starting to wonder if this is just how you are.

Here's what tends to happen for people like you:

You understand yourself really well on paper. You can name your patterns, trace them back to where they started, and explain exactly why you do what you do. And still - nothing shifts.

You default to logic when things get hard. You intellectualize. You analyze. You stay busy. Because staying in your head is easier than feeling what's actually happening in your body - and somewhere along the way, you learned that feeling things wasn't safe, or wasn't useful, or wasn't something people like you did.

And so the anxiety stays. The exhaustion stays. The disconnection stays. Not because you haven't worked hard enough, but because the approach hasn't matched what your system actually needs.

Does this sound familiar?

  • You're self-aware enough to see your patterns - but knowing them hasn't made them stop

  • You feel like you're always bracing for something, even when nothing is wrong

  • You've done 'the work,' and you're still stuck in the same emotional loops

  • You take care of everyone and quietly wonder when someone is going to take care of you

  • You feel disconnected from yourself, your body, or the life you thought you wanted

  • You function fine on the outside and feel like a mess on the inside

Individual Therapy That Actually Goes Somewhere

Individual therapy at Foothold is not a place to just talk about your problems. It is a real working relationship - one where you can be honest, get curious, and start making actual sense of what's been driving you.

We don't hand you a worksheet and call it a session. We pay attention to you - your nervous system, your patterns, your history, and what your body is doing alongside what your mind is saying - and we adjust based on what actually works for you.

Change doesn’t come from forcing or fixing yourself. It comes from understanding yourself - and trusting that your brain and body already know how to move toward healing.
— Sandy Boone, LPC

Our approach draws from some of the most effective body-based and evidence-informed methods available - including Somatic Experiencing, Brainspotting, Internal Family Systems, and Functional Medicine-informed care - alongside more traditional talk therapy when it serves you. Most importantly, we pay attention to you, not to a protocol.

What Working Together Actually Looks Like

In our sessions, you can expect

  • Honesty - no nodding along, no filter, no performing wellness here

  • A pace that respects what your system is ready for - we don't push where you aren't ready to go

  • Direct feedback when you're stuck, delivered with care - not just validation

  • Humor when it helps, and space when words are hard to find

  • Practical tools you can actually use outside of sessions, not just talk about

  • Attention to the whole picture - your nervous system, your body, your history, and what's happening right now

Sessions are conducted via telehealth, which means you can do this work from wherever you actually are - no commute, no waiting rooms, no rearranging your entire day. Most clients meet weekly, though the frequency is always based on what makes sense for you.

Areas we commonly work with:

  • Anxiety and nervous system dysregulation

  • Burnout and chronic stress

  • Trauma and trauma patterns - including relational, developmental, and complex trauma

  • ADHD in adults - including late diagnosis and overwhelm

  • Depression and emotional exhaustion

  • Life transitions and identity shifts

  • Perfectionism, people-pleasing, and boundary work

  • Mind-body connection and somatic awareness

  • Functional medicine-informed mental health - sleep, gut, hormones, lifestyle

  • Grief and loss, adoption, relationship concerns, and spiritual exploration

Who We Work Well With

We especially love working with adults who are:

  • Highly intuitive, curious, and a little spiritually wired - the kind of person who senses things before they can explain them

  • Helpers, healers, therapists, nurses, veterinarians, educators, and first responders carrying more than they let on

  • High-achieving people who feel like something important is still missing, despite doing everything 'right'

  • Women navigating burnout, nervous system overwhelm, hormone-related mood changes, or feeling disconnected from themselves

  • Veterans and service members managing anxiety, depression, PTSD, or the aftermath of chronic stress

  • Adults living with anxiety, ADHD, trauma patterns, or chronic emotional exhaustion who are ready to understand why - not just manage it

  • People who want more than coping skills - you want to actually understand your patterns, your nervous system, and yourself

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Individual therapy is a one-on-one relationship between you and a therapist, focused on your specific experiences, patterns, and goals. At Foothold, individual therapy isn't just talking - it's a working relationship that draws from body-based, trauma-informed, and evidence-supported approaches to help you understand yourself and actually create change.

  • That's actually one of the most common things we hear. If talk therapy alone didn't get to the root of things, it may be because the approach wasn't matched to what your system actually needed. We work with the nervous system and the body alongside the mind - and for many people, that makes all the difference.

  • A good friend listens, and a coach can help you set goals - but neither can do what a trained therapist can. We're not just reflecting your experience back to you or helping you make a plan. We're tracking your nervous system, noticing patterns you can't see from inside them, and working at a level that goes beneath the story you tell about yourself. There's also the clinical relationship itself - the safety, the boundaries, and the specific training behind it - that creates conditions for change that a friendship, no matter how good, simply can't replicate.

  • Foothold Counseling is out of network with insurance. We provide superbills you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Some clients receive partial reimbursement depending on their plan.

  • All individual therapy sessions are conducted via telehealth. In-person availability is limited and currently reserved for Intensive sessions in Lexington, SC. We work with clients virtually across South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, New Jersey, Kentucky, Maine, and Florida.

  • The free consultation is exactly for this. You'll get a real sense of who you'll be working with, and we'll get a sense of what you're looking for. We'd rather help you find the right fit - even if that's someone else - than take on a client who isn't matched well. We take that seriously.
